“Do it. Don’t sit at home. Don’t wait 19 years like I did. There is NOTHING to be scared of.”

That’s Jennifer Mitchell’s advice to anyone in the region who finds themselves lacking their diploma. Jennifer is a recent GED graduate from Big Stone Gap, and she will be the first to tell you – it wasn’t easy. But, she says, “it was SO worth it.”

Jennifer appreciated the flexibility of the program, which allowed her to care for her 4 children and complete the program in only 7 weeks. “You can do a lot of the work at home, and that was really helpful for me”, she states.

Mitchell admits she was nervous about going back to school. “I had been out of school for 19 years and I thought it would be a traditional classroom. I was afraid I would fall behind. I didn’t realize I could learn at my own pace”. She also credits caring teachers with her success.

“The teachers are honestly so nice and they CARE. They make it so comfortable and make you feel like you belong. My teachers made my experience so much better”.

With plans to attend college in the fall and pursue police or veterinary science, we’re excited to see where Jennifer’s career takes her. Way to go, Jennifer!
