“It’s worth every single bit of effort you put in. I didn’t even finish 8th grade, and went back to get my GED 15 years later, and finished it in 3 months.”
Those are Lydia Russell’s words of encouragement for anyone considering getting their GED. She dropped out of high school in 8th grade due to bullying. A few months before her 30th birthday, and after spending years raising her family, she decided she wanted a change for her life. She started first by losing 115 pounds. Then, she joined the ‘Get Ready’ program through a partnership with RACE1. That program encouraged her to pursue her GED. With the help of that program, she also got her first and current job as a VISTA volunteer at AppCAA. She completed her GED on June 20th, 2019, and enrolled at MECC the next month. She’s expecting her associates degree in Small Business Management in the Fall of 2021.
